Shalom! Welcome to Yalla!
This course has one main aim - to get you able to have a 10 minute conversation in Hebrew with a native speaker, in 12 weeks from today.
To do this we'll be learning 350 of the most used conversational words and we'll be learning the grammar that will enable you to use these words in actual conversations.
The course itself follows a conversation, many conversations actually. The course is split into 6 sections and every section will teach you how to have a different and gradually more advanced conversation.
We'll start with saying hello, then learn about asking for someone's name and we'll eventually learn how to speak about what we did over the weekend and ask someone what their plans are for the weekend ahead.
Yalla is focussed on conversational Hebrew.
Not only will you learn the words and grammar that you need. You'll also learn the pronunciation skills that will have you sounding clear and understandable. That way Israelis will more likely speak to you in Hebrew, and your brain will more likely remember those new Hebrew words with more difficult pronunciations.
Finally we'll be talking a lot about memory. One of our greatest frustrations as language learners is forgetting new words that we just learnt. In this course you'll be remembering everything that you learn with our audio/visual flash cards. 5 minutes of review each day (on your phone or computer) will have those 350 words become a part of your long term memory. Plus, each flashcard comes with an audio file of the word so you'll be improving your pronunciation all at the same time.
So come join me in Yalla and let's speak Hebrew now!
Shalom, I’m Mike. I learnt Hebrew at the age of 28 when I moved to Israel from Australia. I didn’t speak more than a few odd words when I landed in Israel in 2012 but slowly I taught myself and after 2 and a half years was able to find meaningful employment in Hebrew, as a school teacher. I taught for two years (in Hebrew). Afterwards I studied to be a nature tour guide at the Wingate Institute and graduated in 2016.
I now live in Tel Aviv and work full time as a Hebrew teacher. I love the language and also helping others learn it more smoothly than I often did. I know firsthand the difficulties of learning Hebrew, especially as someone who has moved countries and is trying to build for themselves a new home. Sitting in social situations and not being able to contribute to the conversation, all of a sudden feeling helpless in not being able to communicate my most basic needs and just being a native English speaker and now having to make sense of this language which is SO different from English (and all latin languages).
All of these challenges are familiar to me. But I got there, and I want to help you get to wherever your “there” is, just with a whole lot less frustration and trial and error than I went through. Over the years I refined my process for learning Hebrew and this process is what you will learn in this course.
"I never thought doing a language course online could be useful, but Mike's course proved me wrong. His method has me remembering every new word and sentences, and I am able to implement them in every day uses. I recommend Teacher Mike to everyone I know needing to learn Hebrew, especially those with time constraints!" (comment taken from previous version of Yalla course)

"Thank you Mike for a great course. You are great at explaining the grammar. I will sign up for the next level!"
- Joachim Åhlen, Sweden
"The pronunciation videos are very good. I had so much trouble with Resh. It's those little things that make all the difference. And I'm really happy with the structure/progress of the course. I feel like I'm learning in small steps that add up to something bigger."
- Chris, Australia
"This is a fantastic and practical course and I did it in record time. Every day I would look forward to doing the lesson. I found it stimulating and I was so engaged that I practised my Hebrew on other people whenever I could. It actually gave me the confidence to have a go and speak Hebrew."(comment taken from previous version of Yalla course)
